Lira at Italian Movie Premier ahead of European Tour with Hugh Masekela...
Lira spent the weekend in Sicily attending the Taormina Film Festival run by film industry veteran Deborah Young where Lira's debut appearance in a full feature has been selected.
The film is called The Italian Consul and starts renowned Italian actress Giuliana De Sio and Lira as the co-lead. The film was short listed as the only Italian (South African co-production) film represented in the Mediterranean section of the festival.
The film which was shot in Cape Town has already received an additional invitation for Japan and given that this is a very prominent fringe festival it has the potential to be selected for Toronto and Montreal.
A highlight of the weekend was when Lira was invited to sit at the same dinner table as Oliver Stone in honour of his achievements hosted post viewing his second re-cut of Alexander. Lira dazzled the audience and ended up being requested by Oliver Stone to sing a song which blew everyone away resulting in a lot of attention around Lira both at the venue and later across various Italian television and print media opportunities.
Lira noted that Mirriam Makeba was the last African artist to perform at the Teatro Del Greco (the same giant outdoor theatre where the viewing of the main films took place) the very venue that Lira performed two songs at this weekend and graced everyone with her presence rounding off a magical event.
Lira is currently in Rome and available for interviews to talk about the forthcoming European dates. For more detail on the tour please go to www.misslira.co.za

A beautiful and touching story !
A beautiful, touching story
- from a generous South African musician.
As a bagpiper, I've played many gigs up in Gauteng, but not so many since recently moving to Cape Town.
Recently, I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man.
He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at the municipal cemetery in Kraaifontein.
I now stay in Simonstown and was not familiar with the northern suburbs, so I got a bit lost on my way there. I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch.
I felt badly and apologised to the men for being late.
I went to the side of the grave and looked down.
The guys had already started filling in and not really knowing what else to do, I started to play..
The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around.
I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends.
I played like I've never played before for this homeless man.
And as I played Amazing Grace,' the workers began to weep.
They wept, I wept, and we all wept together.
When I finished, I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head hung low, my heart was full.
As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, "Jislaaik, I never seen nutting like dat before in all the tweny years I've been putting in septic tanks"
